Ribosomal mistranslation in mammalian cells: cellular response and compensation

Fidelity of protein synthesis and proper folding of proteins are central to the ability of living organisms to efficiently and accurately translate genomic information into functional proteins. Eukaryotic cells have various quality control systems and clearing mechanisms in place to maintain protein homeostasis.

Starting with our work on mistranslation-inducing aminoglycosides, their molecular determinants of selectivity, and mechanisms of toxicity (see references below), we have recently become interested in studying how mammalian cells mitigate the deleterious effects of increased proteostatic stress. In addition to studying the mechanistic and functional details of protein translation and degradation, we apply whole genome transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics approaches towards an integrative study of the cellular response to mistranslation.

We are looking for a highly motivated student with good laboratory skills who is eager to join a dynamic and international research team, the project involves extensive collaborations. Good theoretical background in biochemistry and cell biology is required. The successful applicant will be joining an international team consisting of 2 postdocs and 4-5 PhD students. He/she will complete his/her PhD project enjoying life science research in an excellent research environment provided by the Institute of Medical Microbiology, University of Zürich and ETH Zürich.
