Department of Computational Linguistics

Bachelor's and Master's degree programs of the Department of Computational Linguistics

Due to the ubiquity of language data, a degree in "Computational Linguistics and Language Technology" or in "Digital Linguistics" is useful for almost all fields of research, e.g. information sciences, languages, political sciences, communication sciences, history, economics, law, but also for special fields of biology and geography.

The focus area "phonetics" perfectly prepares for a phd in this field.

Overview Bachelor's and Master's degree programs

Bachelor's and Master's Programs at the Department of Computational Linguistics

  • Bachelor Major (120) and Minor (60) "Computational Linguistics and Language Technology"
  • Master Major (90) and Minor (30) "Computational Linguistics & Language Technology"
  • Master Minor (30) "Digital Linguistics"

In the Monomaster (120)  "Linguistics" (for more information, please consult the website of the study program «Linguistics»)

  • Focus area "Phonetics" (courses offered)
  • Focus area "Digital Linguistics"

First-year students are especially recommended to read the short overview Study Hints as an introduction.

BA and MA study programs "Computational Linguistics and Language Technology" (Major/Minor)

The study program "Computational Linguistics and Language Technology" offers lectures in the areas of computational linguistics, language technology, phonetics and speech signal processing, and cognitive linguistics. The courses combine general knowledge in linguistics and computer science with specific knowledge and skills in computational linguistics. Both study and work in this field require both a strong enjoyment of the use and analysis of languages and a keen interest in computer science.

Master's study program "Digital Linguistics" (Minor)

The Master's program Digital Linguistics requires no previous knowledge and allows an easy entry into the field of Computational Linguistics. It is therefore ideally suited for students without any prior technical knowledge. After the obligatory introduction to the field and to programming, students can freely choose from a variety of lectures.

Study regulation

Master Minor 30: Digital Linguistics (in English)

Please note!  The Master Minor program Digital Linguistics is not suitable for students who have already completed a major or minor in Computational Linguistics during their Bachelor's degree. Therefore, students who have studied Computational Linguistics during their Bachelor's degree should definitely choose the Master's study program Computational Linguistics and Language Technology.

Focus «Digital Linguistics» and «Phonetics» in the study program «Linguistics»

The Department of Computational Linguistics offers two focus areas in the interdisciplinary Master's study program Linguistics: Digital Linguistics and Phonetics. We also teach most of the introductory lectures.

The Linguistics program with the focus area  Digital Linguistics is especially suited for individuals who have no prior technical training and wish to enter the field of computational linguistics.
The focus area Phonetics prepares students for research positions in this field.

For more details on this study program, please consult the page of the study program Linguistics.

Please note! The focus Digital Linguistics in the Linguistics program is not suitable for students who have already completed a major or minor in Computational Linguistics during their Bachelor's degree. Therefore, students who have studied Computational Linguistics during their Bachelor's degree should definitely choose the Master's study program Computational Linguistics and Language Technology.
